Alain Cardon and Vincent Lenhardt created Metasysteme, S.A. in 1976. At the time, it was essentially a group of independent consultants who shared similar methods.

In 1977, Alain Cardon became the sole director of the company, surrounding himself with a small team of consultants.

Over time, Metasysteme developed into a management training and consulting firm with a specialty in OD, coaching and experiential work. The tools for intervention are its own methods developed over the years and supplemented by innovative techniques including the Systemic (or holistic) approach, Transactional Analysis, NLP, Paradoxical approach to problem solving, as well as basic premises from quantum physics. The MetaSysteme group was further expanded in 1992, with the creation of a school for trainers and consultants, MetaSystem Ecole.

The North American office opened in New York in 1993 as Metasystem Consulting Group (MCG). An American versed in the MetaSysteme method, Lisa Murrell, was appointed its director. The two groups have worked closely together researching, developing and exchanging their techniques on a regular basis. MCG (U.S.) engages in ongoing collaboration with Metasysteme, helping the whole group maintain a global perspective.
